| With release looming, Microsoft previews Office 2008
Microsoft Office for Mac 2008 doesn't officially ship until the kick-off of this month's Macworld Conference and Expo on January 15. But Microsoft has taken the wraps off the latest version of Office, showcasing its new features and capabilities. “This is a really big release for us," Geoff Price, Product Unit Manager for Office 2008 for Mac at Microsoft's Mac Business Unit, told Macworld. “We are moving with Apple as it moves forward with its operating system." Office will be available in three versions: Office 2008 for Mac ($400; $240 upgrade), Office 2008 for Mac Home and Student Edition ($150) and Office 2008 for Mac Special Media Edition ($500; $300 upgrade). When it arrives on U.S. retail shelves later this month (with international sales to follow), Office 2008 will sport a number of new features, not the least of which is the ability to run natively on Intel-based Macs.
State hears messages of tolerance and peace on MLK Day
George Cultural Center in Bloomfield Township as community leaders hosted their annual King Day luncheon. Attendees included Gov. Jennifer Granholm, U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., and U.S. Rep. Joe Knollenberg, R-Bloomfield Township. Rudene Glass, 57, of Pontiac said she tries each year to attend a King Day program. She attended OU's event, where the school awarded scholarships after Belafonte spoke. Glass, the development director of Catholic Social Services in Detroit, said Belafonte's talk moved her. Neda Ulaby, NPR Biography
Neda Ulaby reports on arts and culture for NPR. Her work includes profiling authors, musicians, and others who inform the world through creative expression, and covering the complicated relationships between art, artists, and society. Ulaby came to NPR in 2000. She was recruited through NPR's Next Generation Radio Initiative, and first helped to produce Weekly Edition: The Best of NPR. After landing a position on the cultural desk as an editorial assistant, she started reporting regularly for the desk, augmenting her radio work with arts journalism for the Washington City Paper. Ulaby's stories include a series on women record producers and a piece on the overlap between opera lovers and aging fans of punk rock. Announcing the arrival of the first A380 in S'pore
IN A welcome fit for the 'new queen in the sky', the world's first Airbus 380 superjumbo landed at Changi Airport at about 6.40pm on Wednesday to a water cannon salute. It is a privilege reserved for the very special and the double-decker jet christened 9V-SKA on the Singapore aircraft register is believed to the first to receive such an honour at Changi. Dressed in SIA's livery, the giant bird - as long as a soccer pitch and with a tail seven storeys high - flew in in from the the Airbus headquarters in Toulouse. It was towed into position and docked at the soon-to-be-opened Terminal 3, where Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and about several hundred guests had gathered since 6pm in eager anticipation. The giant bird's flight to Singapore was piloted by a four-member SIA crew led by chief A-380 pilot Captain Robert Ting.

Windows Vista has received a sour reputation in the year it has been on the market. Some users of complained about driver incompatibility and performance issues -- among other things -- compared to the venerable Windows XP operating system the came before it. Microsoft addressed a number of these issues with Service Pack 1, but many consumers and businesses are still sticking with Windows XP. Microsoft is looking to give customers more incentive to upgrade to Windows Vista by cutting the price on some versions of the operating system. Although upgrade versions account for less than 10% of Vista licenses, two upgrade editions will see price cuts. The range-topping Windows Vista Ultimate (full) will fall from $399 to $319. Windows Vista Ultimate (upgrade) drops to $219 from $259.
