NAACP Demands Apology From Overstock.com Founder
The NAACP demanded an apology Friday from the founder of Overstock.com, who said Utah minorities who don't graduate from high school might as well be burned or thrown away. Patrick Byrne's comments were posted on YouTube. The video clip was from a debate two weeks ago in Provo, where he was speaking in favor of vouchers, public aid for families sending kids to private schools. A statewide voucher program, granting $500 to $3,000 per child, based on family income, is on the Utah ballot Nov. 6. On YouTube, Byrne says: “Right now, 40 percent of Utah minorities are not graduating from high school. You may as well burn those kids. That's the end of their life. That's the end of their ability to achieve in this society if they do not get a high school education." He goes on to add: “You might as, just throw the kids away." Byrne has made similar remarks in other debates.
Amnesty condemns Guantánamo trials
The charges are the first from the Guantánamo war court alleging direct involvement in the 2001 attacks on the United States and the first involving the death penalty. In a statement today, Amnesty said the move raised "yet more" questions about US conduct in the "war on terror". Amnesty claimed five of the six men charged were held for more than three years in secret CIA custody at unknown locations before being transferred to Guantánamo in September 2006. The CIA has confirmed that at least one of the men, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, was subjected to "waterboarding", an interrogation technique of simulated drowning that has been widely criticised as torture. "Waterboarding is torture, and torture is an international crime. No one has been held accountable for such crimes.
South Korean president faces fight over cabinet picks
Special prosecutors last week cleared Lee of various allegations, including that he was involved in a 2001 stock price manipulation case. Lee, who flatly denied the charges, was the country's first president-elect to undergo a criminal inquiry. The main opposition party, the United Democratic Party, is the largest voting bloc with 141 seats in the 298-member National Assembly. Members have blasted Han for failing to report an expensive apartment his wife purchased in 2001, when he was serving as foreign minister, in violation of the ethics law covering government officials. Han, 72, has said he was too busy to report the purchase because he was also serving as president of the UN General Assembly. Although the post of prime minister is largely ceremonial, the occupant leads the country if the president becomes incapacitated.

In honor of both March Madness and The Sporting Blog finding video of the horrifically soul-crunching defeat suffered by Memphis against Louisville in a recent C-USA title game, I'm taking nominations for a tournament. In the same vein as "the ur-tard" Bill Simmons' "Levels of Losing", I'd like to see your nominations for the most painful defeat any team has ever suffered. This is limited to actual sporting defeats, as including something like the Hank Gathers incident would most likely be a run-away winner. Events from all sports (Even NASCAR and soccer) will be accepted into this tournament. Right now I have a few examples that are locked into the tournament. I'm hoping for 16 or even a full 32. I'm looking for gut-wrenching defeats, be it in the manner of losing, or the result of that loss.
Software EU Pummels Microsoft With $1.4B USD Fine
The United States is still, and will be for quite some time, the world's largest single economy. The EU would not likely engage in a tradewar with the US that it will lose. The Eurozone is larger when combining total output of all member nations, but the unity ends there. When France and Germany can come to terms with their own economic policies, along with the other smaller member nations, into a true united economic entity where elected officials of one nation cannot dictate the economic policies of others (among the reasons why it took a very long time for certain nations to join the EU, or reject the euro), then you'll have a proper single economic entity. That won't happen until Europe becomes quite literally, "The United States of Europe" where governments merge. .
YESTERDAY’S RUMORS!
Fast forward to 2008 and Golden Girl is back in the headlines. The radio chick (or is that groupie chick?) is allegedly writing a book about all her experiences in the entertainment business. What leaks out first? A supposed lesbian tryst with Lil' Kim, which is very explicit. “Anyway, there I was, in a position I had never been in, laying in bed with the Queen Bee, ready to eat her *****. [Illseed note: I think she means cake.] We were in some exquisitely designed bedroom, where she was dressed in a thong…" I don't really believe this one, but Click here for an excerpt and some pics. It's a raw one. SNOOP: I DON'T NEED DR.
